Project Classes
Project Classes are a simple catalog for classifying and grouping your Projects (Job Costing / Project Accounting module) by type or category — for example "Residential Construction", "Consulting" or "Maintenance". Each Project can optionally have a single Class assigned to it.
What is it and what is it for?
Each Class is a simple record with a Name and free-form Notes. It has no tabs or detail lines: it's a supporting catalog, similar to General Ledger Account Classes or Bill of Materials (BOM) Classes, but applied to your projects.
Once created, the class becomes available in the Project Type field on every Project header, and is used to:
- Organize your projects by type or business line, so they're easier to find.
- Filter and group Project reports and dashboards by class.
- Keep a consistent criteria when entering similar projects, instead of typing the type by hand on each one.
How to use it
- Open the Project Classes list and click Create (visible only if you have add permission).
- Enter the class's Name (required, can't repeat) and, if you want, add free-form Notes to describe it better.
- Click Save. The class becomes immediately available to assign to any Project.
- From the list, you can open any class to view its Details and, if you have permission, Edit or Delete it.
When editing a class, AdmCloud reuses the same creation form, only changing the screen title; the steps to save are identical.
Main capabilities
- A simple list, sorted alphabetically by name, with direct access to View and, if you have permission, Edit each class.
- Selection of the class from the Project Type field on a Project header.
- Search by name directly from the list.
Key fields
| Field | What it is for |
|---|---|
| Name | Identifies the class. Required and can't repeat between existing classes. Maximum 200 characters. |
| Notes | Optional free-form text describing the class's grouping criteria. |
Validations when saving
- Name is required.
- Name can't repeat between existing classes, both when creating and editing.
- Name can't exceed 200 characters.
Deleting
A class can't be deleted while any Project still has it assigned. In that case, AdmCloud shows you the name of every Project using it, so you can assign those projects a different class (or none) before trying to delete it again.
Availability, plans and conditions
- This feature requires the Project Accounting (Job Costing) module active. It's available from the Standard plan up (and therefore also on Premium, Premium Plus and Premium Plus Payroll). On the Enterprise plan, it depends on the Projects module being enabled for your company.
- Without this module active, the screen shows a "not available on this edition" message.
- Access is controlled with the "Projects" permission of the user group, with separate levels for browsing, adding, editing and deleting.
Tips and common mistakes
Create your classes first (for example, by project type or business line) before entering your Projects, so you can pick them right away from the project header without interrupting data entry.
"A record with this description already exists" shows up when the name you typed matches an existing class; check the list before creating a new one with a similar name.
If you need to delete a class and AdmCloud tells you it's in use, check which Projects are listed in the message and change their class from their own record before trying to delete it again.
